“Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery” – Charles Caleb Colton We love Cosplay, unabashedly so, and one of the cool things about hanging out at Cons is hearing why someone enjoys a character or genre. Cosplay is the biggest form of that flattery, and we aim to bring you the stories behind all those people in funky, fun dress up.
This special edition features a first time contributor for the MoGT and the very talented Shiro Cosplay
Chinako: Who is Shiro? Tell us what you like to Cosplay.
Shiro: My name is Jessie and I am an online college student who is studying Web Development. On the internet, I go by my cosplay name Harunashiro (or Shiro for short) and I’m in my 7th year of cosplaying. I like cosplaying from video games, but I want to start creating and bringing my own original characters to life as well as cosplay from manga and anime that I grew up with.
Chinako: What does cosplay represent for you?
Shiro: For me, cosplay represents someone’s love for the character they have chosen to dress up as. This particular kind of art form gives me the ability to bring characters that I can relate to and that I love to life.
Chinako: How did you get your start and who’s your biggest supporter?
Shiro: I didn’t know what cosplay was until 2006 or 2007, but I remembered being absolutely fascinated by the fact that there were people dressing up as characters from manga, anime, video games, and movies. In 2008, I decided to jump on the bandwagon; Otakon 2008 being my first convention and Minato Arisato from Persona 3 being my first cosplay. I’ve been addicted to the hobby ever since, hah.
Chinako: What are your biggest pet peeves while Cosplaying?
Shiro: My biggest pet peeve is having difficulty figuring out how to use the bathroom in a complicated costume. My Nilin cosplay from Remember Me was a perfect example as the construction of her boots wasn’t very friendly and made sitting in a car or a chair was very difficult. I took note that the next time I cosplayed a character with crazy shoes, to figure out a better way to put them together so that they can be taken apart easily with no hassle!
Chinako: What’s the cosplay culture like where you’re from, do you have friends that cosplay as well?
Shiro: I’m not really sure how to answer the first question. I guess it kind of depends on what part of North Carolina you’re in; but for me, the cosplay community is kind of small outside of conventions. I’m lucky to have made the friends that I have made now who are into this crazy hobby even though we live pretty far apart.
Chinako: You seem to love gaming, particularly the Final Fantasy series. How does this tie into cosplay for you?
Shiro: Final Fantasy ties into cosplay for me because not only have I played the majority of them, I have favorite FF titles that gives me plenty of characters that I like from the series that I could cosplay from.
Chinako: If you could design a cosplay that cost and time was not an issue for, what would be your epic cosplay?
Shiro: Ack! It’s a tie between Zero Saints Thirty Suit from Saints Row IV, Beatrix from Final Fantasy IX, and the Bard class from FINAL FANTASY XIV.
Chinako: Do you have any upcoming events/projects you can tell us about? Do you plan on working web design into your cosplay hobby as well?
Shiro: My upcoming event is Animazement 2015 which is in May. It’ll be the first time that I’ll be bringing four cosplays to this convention, as long as I’m able to finish them. I’m currently working on Yuna (FFX), Rikku (FFX), Book 4 Korra (TLoK), and Cinque (FFType-0). I haven’t made a substantial amount of progress on any of them since I’ve been so busy, haha! I haven’t really thought about making a website dedicating to my cosplay hobby, but the idea does interest me!
Chinako: Are there any cosplayers that have inspired you or that you look up to?
Shiro: Oh, gosh, I have so many… ! I’d hate to leave anyone out, but here are a few cosplayers that I can name from the top of my head: VampyBitMe, ItsRainingNe0n, Jounink, OtukiRikutO, HezaChan, NatsuoCosplay, Alicia Loraine, Vanessa Wedge, and Shiyashii.
Please send Shiro some cosplay love:
