“Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery” – Charles Caleb Colton
We love Cosplay, unabashedly so, and one of the cool things about hanging out at Cons is hearing why someone enjoys a character or genre. Cosplay is the biggest form of that flattery, and we aim to bring you the stories behind all those people in funky, fun dress up.
My first real nerd venture when I was a kid was an unhealthy obsession with trading cards. I collected thousands if not 10x that. It was a fun little hobby I used to follow my idols. Oh how I wanted to be on one some day, dressed up in Royal blue holding my catchers glove, or a bright orange helmet with a bronco on the side. But not all of us are fortunate enough to have that much athletic ability. What are you gonna do? Cosplay! That’s what!
The very awesome idea of melting two pretty cool things together is happening from the cool kids over at CosCards! They chatted with us about their endeavor:
MoGT: What does cosplay represent for you?
CosCards: Cosplay is an art form that allows individuals to become their favorite characters from movies, TV and video games. We love to capture the amazing work of cosplayers in photographs at cons and in locations around the city that enhances the creativity with beautiful backgrounds
MoGT: What events can fans find you at? What has the response been like?
CosCards: We are usually shooting at all the big cons in Southern California, WonderCon, SDCC, Comikaze, Long Beach CC. In the past year we’ve traveled all over the country to shoot amazing cosplay.
MoGT: Who are some of the names out there that are in your series?
CosCards: In our 1st year we have Ani-Mia, LeeAnna Vamp, Raychul Moore, Lindsay Elyse, Wind of the Stars, Toni Darling, Alicia Marie, Abby Dark-Star, AZ PowerGirl and many more! We launched out 1st set with 23 cosplayers and a checklist!
MoGT: How do you decide who gets a card in a series?
CosCards: Having been shooting cosplay professionally for quite a few years at cons, we knew many of the cosplayers we asked, and as we started shooting word spread and we were contacted by many more cosplayers over the past year.
CosCards: We are planning to expand the brand in 2015 with 48 cosplay cards , Con Exclusives, and some teamups with larger brands to bring Coscards to the entire world!
MoGT: How did you get started on this project?
CosCards: Being con goers, we had noticed the need for a lower price point collectible for cosplayers. Younger fans may not be able to collect all their favorite cosplayers when the cheapest prints are sometimes 15.00-20.00, so we decided to create a high quality product that fans could collect for as little as $2.00 per cosplayer.
MoGT: Any one you really hope to get signed to feature?
CosCards: We are talking with many cosplayers around the country and hoping to add Jessica Nigri, Linda Le, Ivy DoomKitty, Monika Lee, Riddle, Kristen Hughey, Meagan Marie and some additional overseas cosplayers to the collection.
